What to Wear to a Photography Session
Photoshoot coming up?
this is the post for you.
The number one question I get asked when someone has photos coming up is, “what should I wear?”
I’ve put together a few styling tips to help you look amazing in your photos. While the main thing is for you and your family to feel yourself, if you need some pointers to get you started in choosing your outfits, this may be helpful.
It is so worth it for your photos to spend a bit of time coordinating outfits, as it will impact your overall vibe and feeling of your photos. I love the feel cotton t-shirts, linen pants, and flowy dresses, as well as layering with textures. Bare feet are perfect for lifestyle newborn sessions. Your outfit definitely does not need to be fancy or formal to look good.

WEAR SOMETHING YOU ARE COMFORTABLE IN
The best thing you can do for your photos is wear clothes that fit well, drape nicely over your frame, and do not need to be adjusted heaps.
The worst thing is when you are trying to relax and enjoy the moment and have to keep tugging at your clothing. I want you to feel as comfortable as possible, because if you aren’t, it may show in your photos.
MOVEMENT IS KEY
Having movement in your photos is an amazing way to bring your images to life. One way to add this is by wearing clothing that can move, or you can move in. Dresses or flowy skirts are wonderful for this.
AVOID SUPER BRIGHT COLORS.
I love a good rust orange or deep red, but please, please avoid neon at all costs.
COORDINATE, DON’T MATCH
Instead of having everyone wear the same color, try think of 2-3 colors that go well together and coordinate. A good way to avoid colors becoming overwhelming, is to be sure to make sure there is plenty of neutrals in your outfits, and then adding a few bits of color.
NO LOGOS
Please avoid any words or pictures on your clothing. This is very distracting in photos and generally does not photograph well. So as much as your son loves his Paw Patrol t-shirt, please, please not for photos, you can thank me later ;)
PATTERN SELECTIVELY
In family photos especially, try not have too many family members wearing prints and patterns. A few are OK, but more than one or two people with patterns can quickly become overwhelming and distracting in the photos. Also, pro tip: Dad is usually the tallest and the back of the photos, so having him in a solid colored shirt will be a perfect backdrop for someone in front of him!
TEXTURES ARE YOUR FRIEND
Layering your outfit to add texture with a jacket, scarf, or jewelry is a great way to add depth and interest to your photos. Other great ways to add texture is with lace, linen, or other different clothing materials.
EMPTY YOUR POCKETS
Avoid carrying things in your pockets during your photo shoot. Keys and cell phones cause unsightly bumps and bulges that can be hard to edit out later. I am happy to carry these things for you, or leave them behind.
TIME OF YEAR
When you book your photo shoot, think about what time of year it will be in, as this may change the color scheme of your photos. If it’s an autumn shoot, denim and maroon with a faux fur vest on bubs would be adorable. Or summer, you may want to decide on something a bit lighter- like beige and white, with bit of pink. The sky is the limit, really, but your photos will thank you if you give a bit of thought about what to wear first. :)
PREPARATION IS KEY
Giving a bit of thought to what you want your photos to feel like before your shoot is huge. Do you want formal? A jacket and dress pants for the guys might be where to go. Romantic? A long dress for the girls. Boho? Hats are key!
Remember, the most important thing is to relax and enjoy. Gum boots and stubbies are perfect as well. ;)
